Women's Ruched Strapless Maxi Dress

Ruching does two things on a strapless dress: it holds and it shapes. Here the gathers run horizontally across a bandeau bodice, so the fabric grips gently along its whole width rather than at one seam, and the shirred texture catches light across the torso. The neckline is a clean straight line, which leaves the shoulders and collarbone completely open. The bodice is lined and finished with a grip tape along the top edge, so it stays where it is set.

The skirt is where the design turns. A wrap panel crosses the front and is gathered into folds across the hip, so the drape falls asymmetrically rather than straight down, and the overlap forms a high slit at one side. That slit is a consequence of the construction rather than a cut into the fabric, which is why it sits and moves cleanly. The rest of the skirt falls long and smooth from the drape to the floor.

The yellow is warm and saturated, and on a strapless shape it does most of the work on its own, so accessories can stay minimal: bare shoulders, one bracelet, a pair of heels.
